The Indiana Fever are poised for a dramatic leap forward in the WNBA landscape — not only because Caitlin Clark is expected to take a big step in her second year but also because of a major cultural and leadership shift sparked by new head coach Stephanie White.
While former head coach Christie Sides helped the Fever improve significantly — jumping from 13 wins in 2023 to 20 wins and a playoff berth in 2024, thanks in large part to back-to-back Rookie of the Year winners in Aliyah Boston and Clark — there were signs that the team had plateaued under her leadership. On-court frustration, questionable late-game decisions, and a lack of cohesive energy often left the team looking disconnected. The organization recognized the need for new direction and made the tough decision to part ways with Sides.
Enter Stephanie White.
White brings not only a stellar coaching résumé — including the 2023 WNBA Coach of the Year award — but also a deep personal history with the Fever, having been the team’s original point guard in 2000. That connection has already paid dividends. Clark, who has always thrived under strong, communicative coaching, is reportedly thrilled by the change. The early chemistry between White and Clark has been evident in both their demeanor and the team’s energy.
White also brought in Briann January, a Fever legend in her own right, to join her staff. January has quickly established a mentoring relationship with Clark, one that didn’t exist under Sides. Video clips from recent practices show a level of engagement, encouragement, and mutual respect that’s been sorely missing in prior seasons.
The change in tone extends to the entire roster. Aliyah Boston, speaking at Media Day, appeared relaxed, confident, and genuinely excited — a noticeable shift from previous seasons. Clark, too, has been all smiles, and her body language suggests a much greater comfort level within the current system.
The difference is palpable: the 2025 Fever aren’t just trying to win games —they’re building a championship-caliber culture.
