The New Orleans Saints have completed their 2025 NFL Draft, but some roster needs still linger. This outcome wasn’t unexpected, given the team’s circumstances heading into the draft. One of the first steps in this post-draft strategy was the signing of edge defender and outside linebacker Chris Rumph II.
Rumph brings a notable connection to New Orleans through new defensive coordinator Brandon Staley. Staley, during his time as the Los Angeles Chargers’ head coach, selected Rumph in his first draft with the team. This previous relationship suggests that Staley sees potential in Rumph and believes he can contribute to the Saints’ defensive scheme.
During his time with the Chargers, Rumph played as an outside linebacker, contributing to their pass rush and showing flashes of his ability to get to the quarterback. However, his 2024 season was derailed by a foot injury that kept him sidelined for the entire year. Despite this setback, the Saints see value in his experience and skill set.
This signing is particularly important because, prior to bringing in Rumph, the Saints did not have any outside linebackers on the roster with actual NFL experience. That’s a major concern given how essential the outside linebacker role is in Staley’s defensive system, which relies on edge pressure and versatility at the linebacker position.
Although the move might not make major headlines, Rumph has the opportunity to step into a significant role on the Saints’ defense. If he can stay healthy and return to form, he could be a key contributor, helping fill a glaring hole and solidify the team’s front seven.
