The Atlanta Braves have experienced a tumultuous start to the 2025 MLB season. After a discouraging 0-7 opening, the team has shown signs of recovery, winning seven of their last ten games. Despite this resurgence, the Braves hold a 14-17 record, placing them third in the National League East, trailing the division-leading New York Mets (22-11) and the Philadelphia Phillies (18-14).
A significant contributor to the Braves’ offense has been designated hitter Marcell Ozuna. In 28 games, Ozuna boasts a .277 batting average, a .439 on-base percentage, and a .468 slugging percentage, culminating in a .907 OPS. His performance places him among the top hitters in the league, ranking 18th in OPS. Notably, Ozuna leads the team in on-base percentage .
However, Ozuna’s future with the Braves is uncertain. At 34 years old and in the final year of his contract, he is set to become a free agent after the season. Given his age and defensive limitations, the Braves may be hesitant to offer a long-term deal. Consequently, if the team’s performance doesn’t improve, trading Ozuna before the deadline could be a strategic move to acquire assets rather than losing him for nothing in free agency .
The Braves’ offensive inconsistencies have been evident. For instance, in a recent 6-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies, the team recorded their second-lowest expected weighted on-base average (.243) and average exit velocity (84.7 mph) of the season, indicating underlying struggles despite the win .
Pitching has also been a concern. In a 2-1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, Braves pitcher Grant Holmes delivered a commendable performance, allowing two runs over six innings with a career-high nine strikeouts. However, the offense managed only two hits, highlighting the team’s challenges in providing run support .
As the season progresses, the Braves face critical decisions. If they remain below .500 and out of playoff contention, trading key players like Ozuna could be a pragmatic approach to rebuilding. Conversely, if the team gains momentum, retaining such players might bolster a postseason push. The coming weeks will be pivotal in determining the Braves’ direction for the remainder of the season.
