JJ McCarthy Set to Lead Vikings in 2025 NFL Season
The Minnesota Vikings appear ready to hand the reins of their offense to former Michigan Wolverines quarterback JJ McCarthy, who is expected to step into the starting role in 2025. Although there was initial hope that McCarthy would see action during his rookie year in 2024, a preseason injury sidelined him for the entire campaign, delaying his debut in the NFL.
Now fully healthy and preparing for his sophomore season, McCarthy enters 2025 as Minnesota’s projected QB1. One major advantage for the young signal-caller is the presence of star wide receiver Justin Jefferson, who recently shared insights on their growing chemistry.
Jefferson Praises Connection With McCarthy
During an interview, Jefferson spoke positively about his rapport with the young quarterback.
“It’s been great,” Jefferson said. “Him being around last year helped us build a relationship. Now that he’s the starting quarterback, we’ve had more chances to talk, learn each other’s preferences—like how he likes to throw, what types of plays he favors. That off-the-field connection is huge too. We’re just continuing to build that bond.”
Jefferson’s remarks signal growing optimism in the Vikings’ camp about the team’s future with McCarthy under center. Building trust and timing between quarterback and receiver is essential, and it appears that process is well underway in Minnesota.
A New Era Begins for the Vikings’ Offense
With the team parting ways with Sam Darnold, who led the offense during most of 2024, the spotlight now turns to McCarthy. The former Michigan standout guided the Wolverines to a national championship in 2023 and brings a winning pedigree and strong leadership traits to the pros.
Darnold helped the Vikings field a top-10 offense in 2024, with the team averaging 24.5 points per game—ranking ninth in the league. However, despite Darnold’s competent performance, Minnesota appears ready to invest in the long-term development of McCarthy, hoping he can elevate the team to greater heights.
While it’s unclear whether the rookie-turned-starter will immediately replicate or exceed Darnold’s production, the Vikings seem poised to give McCarthy time to grow. With elite playmakers like Jefferson at his disposal, the foundation is set for McCarthy to thrive.
