Steelers Punter Cameron Johnston Returns from Injury, Set for Camp Battle
PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers have received a boost with the return of punter Cameron Johnston, who is fully recovered from the season-ending knee injury he sustained in Week 1 last year against the Falcons. Johnston, 33, has resumed punting without issue and is back at practice.
“Feeling really good,” Johnston said. “Back out there practicing, punting fully.”
After signing a three-year deal with the Steelers following a stint with the Houston Texans, Johnston was expected to resolve the team’s long-standing punting problems. He impressed in last year’s preseason, highlighted by a 60-yard punt against the Bills and a standout training camp performance.
In Johnston’s absence, Corliss Waitman filled in effectively. Now, both will compete for the starting job this summer at training camp in Latrobe, with Johnston aiming to reclaim the role.
“The staff here are incredible and helped so much,” Johnston added. “We put a lot of work in throughout rehab, and it feels really good.”
