Breaking News: Philadelphia Phillies Veteran Reliever Claimed Off Waivers By NL East Rival….

The Philadelphia Phillies recently experienced a setback when veteran right-handed reliever José Ruiz was claimed off waivers by their NL East rival, the Atlanta Braves. Ruiz, 30, brings nine years of MLB experience, having previously played with the San Diego Padres, Chicago White Sox, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Phillies. He enjoyed a solid 2024 campaign in Philadelphia, posting a 5-1 record with a 3.71 ERA and 52 strikeouts in 52 relief appeajorances (51 innings). However, his performance has declined in 2025, with a current 1-0 record and an 8.16 ERA across 14 1/3 innings pitched. His most recent outing saw him give up five runs in a single inning against the Milwaukee Brewers, raising concerns about his form. The Braves’ acquisition comes as they seek to strengthen their bullpen, following the designation of Craig Kimbrel for assignment after just one appearance.

This move adds to a series of bullpen changes within the NL East division. Notably, the Washington Nationals claimed right-hander Michael Rucker off waivers from the Phillies in September 2024. Rucker had struggled with a 7.04 ERA across 19 appearances in Triple-A, but the Nationals offered him an opportunity to get his career back on track.

The Phillies, currently leading the NL East, are looking to bolster their bullpen following the suspension of top reliever José Alvarado. With the Braves strengthening their bullpen and the Mets facing challenges, the division race is intensifying. The Phillies may consider trade options to address their bullpen needs as the season progresses.
