A recent rumor has sparked interest across the NFL, and it involves one of the league’s top defensive players: T.J. Watt of the Pittsburgh Steelers. While there are no ongoing trade discussions between the Steelers and the Detroit Lions, some speculative buzz has surfaced that could hint at a potential future connection.
According to a report from Woodward Sports Network, Watt has confided in another NFL player that, should his contract extension negotiations with Pittsburgh fall apart and he either gets traded or enters free agency in 2026, the Detroit Lions would be his preferred destination. This revelation has added a layer of intrigue to his ongoing situation with the Steelers.
The key factor drawing Watt to Detroit? Head coach Dan Campbell.
Neal Ruhl, a host for Woodward Sports, shared on air:
> “(Watt) would really enjoy playing for Dan Campbell in Detroit if he’s unable to get something done in Pittsburgh,” he explained. “Let me be clear—this doesn’t mean a trade is imminent, and I’m not suggesting there’s a deal in place. I’m just sharing what I was told he mentioned to another player in the league.”
At the moment, Watt and the Steelers are engaged in contract discussions. However, the negotiations appear to be on shaky ground, particularly after Watt chose to sit out of the team’s recent minicamp sessions. While this could be interpreted as a tactical move, it also signals some level of dissatisfaction or concern over his current deal.
Despite these tensions, the idea of Pittsburgh parting ways with Watt seems highly unlikely—at least for now. As a seven-time Pro Bowler and one of the league’s most dominant defenders, Watt is considered a foundational piece of the Steelers’ roster. Any move to trade or let him walk would represent a monumental shift for the franchise.
