
Berube’s “stern tone and steely demeanor indicate where the Leafs will be headed this off-season
The Maple Leafs yesterday formally introduced their new coach Craig Berube and it was “evident there’s a new era in Leafs Land,” as the “clock is now ticking on what could be the last big management move” of President Brendan Shanahan’s tenure running the organization, according to Adam Proteau of THE HOCKEY NEWS. Berube spoke “vaguely about responsibility and accountability” in his remarks, but his “stern tone and steely demeanor indicate where the Leafs will be headed this off-season.” Proteau wrote the team “needs to show marked improvement to keep Shanahan and GM Brad Treliving running the show in the long term.” Shanahan and Treliving “looked comfortable” yesterday “putting all their eggs in the new coach’s basket.” Proteau: “Don’t fool yourself — Treliving and Shanahan are both under pressure to create a new and improved look for the Leafs.” While Berube is a “crucial piece of the puzzle” for them, the front office will “do much of the heavy lifting that comes with accountability in the next few months.” If the team meets the same fate next season, the accountability will “fall on Shanahan and Treliving,” and “at least one of the two could pay for it with their job.” There “wasn’t a clear-cut desperation in the voices of any of the three men,” but there “must be consequences for Toronto’s playoff woes.” Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment CEO Keith Pelley sat “silently” in the front row of the presser, but he is now “deeply involved and invested in the choices he’s made about the
