Latest Update: Just In Virginia Tech Hokies Football Head Coach Brent Pry Sends Clear Message To Top Sensational Quarterback After He Announced Shocking Departure…

Virginia Tech QB Kyron Drones Slides in ACC Rankings Ahead of Crucial 2025 Season

One of the earliest commitments to return to Virginia Tech for the 2024 season was quarterback Kyron Drones, who transferred from Baylor ahead of the 2023 campaign. After stepping in as the starter in Week 3 due to Grant Wells’ injury, Drones quickly became the centerpiece of the Hokies’ offense.

His announcement to return for another year sparked a domino effect, with Virginia Tech’s top four wide receivers and star running back Bhayshul Tuten also choosing to come back. That wave of offensive continuity created serious optimism in Blacksburg about what the unit could accomplish.

Heading into the 2024 season, Drones was viewed as one of the top five quarterbacks in the ACC, per 247Sports’ Brad Crawford. However, that excitement has cooled. In the newly released 2025 ACC quarterback rankings by Carter Bahns, Drones has fallen to ninth place—a significant drop from the expectations just a year ago.

“Kyron Drones was a popular breakout pick entering last season,” Bahns wrote, “but he actually regressed statistically in his second year at Virginia Tech and missed time down the stretch due to injury. It was a disappointing season all around for the Hokies and for Drones individually.”

Bahns acknowledged that Drones’ sophomore year at Virginia Tech didn’t meet the hype but also suggested there’s still upside if the dual-threat QB can return to his 2023 form. That year, Drones recorded 17 touchdown passes to only 3 interceptions, while also contributing 818 yards on the ground.

Bahns called him a “buy-low” candidate—a quarterback with talent and past production who might just need a clean slate and good health to rebound.

And that health remains the biggest question mark.

Drones missed the end of spring practices and the annual Spring Game due to a medical procedure in early April. While head coach Brent Pry has assured fans that Drones is on track to return for summer workouts, concerns linger about whether he’ll be fully healthy by the time the season starts.

With significant roster changes and a need to regain momentum, the 2025 season is shaping up to be a make-or-break year for Drones. If he can stay healthy and find his rhythm, he still has the tools to put himself back on the NFL radar.

However, after slipping four spots in the latest ACC rankings, Drones enters the year with something to prove—and less margin for error.
