Emma Raducanu leaves because of wrist stiffness
Murray is unable to select a substitute partner.
After Emma Raducanu stated she was withdrawing from the mixed doubles owing to a wrist injury, Andy Murray played his final Wimbledon match.
The two were scheduled to play their first game on Saturday night, but Raducanu said that she was withdrawing in order to avoid being hurt.
She added, “Unfortunately, I woke up this morning with some stiffness in my right wrist. As a result, I have decided to make the extremely difficult decision to withdraw from the mixed doubles tonight.”
“I’m sad because I really wanted to play with Andy, but I have to be careful,”
Murray cannot select a different partner in accordance with the event regulations. They will be replaced by another pair.
The fans and those who purchased tickets for No. 1 Court, who were especially hoping to watch Murray, are incredibly disappointed by the news. In front of many of his peers, including Novak Djokovic, the 37-year-old had a heartfelt farewell, which featured a video eulogy and an on-court interview with Sue Barker in the men’s doubles on Thursday.
On Sunday, Raducanu is scheduled to compete in her fourth-round women’s singles match. She would have had less time to recuperate if the mixed doubles had been scheduled later.
Judy Murray described Raducanu’s decision to stop playing with her kid as “astonishing” on X. After recuperating from his most recent illness, Andy Murray stated on Thursday that he will not be changing his mind about retiring. I’m prepared for it.
Since winning the 2021 US Open championship in New York, Raducanu has struggled with injuries. She had surgery on both wrists in May 2023, which prevented her from competing on the Tour until this January.
Sunday she plays Lulu Sun in a singles match; she is understandably wary of overtaxing her body after undergoing ankle surgery last year, which kept her out for eight months.
Murray will now depart for a family vacation before getting ready for his career’s last competition, which will take place in Paris at the Olympics. Murray is enrolled in both the singles and doubles competitions with Dan Evans.
Raducanu, who is currently favored to make it at least to the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, must pray that the issue does not derail her run.
Despite being seen looking uncomfortable, Raducanu’s Saturday night at the All England Club does not seem to be too much reason for concern. Before the match later on Saturday in the Euro 2024 quarterfinal, she once more donned an England shirt.
